Introducing Let's Chat
Let's Chat is a new feature coming to Limbic Care - our Conversational AI engagement platform for Mental Health Services. This feature, available on iOS and Android devices, allows service users to have natural conversations with a highly empathetic and non-judgemental character, enabled by a Large Language Model (LLM) based conversational agent made safe and regulated by the Limbic Layer. This new update means Mental Health Services are better equipped than ever to support service users between therapy sessions and improve treatment outcomes.
Bridging Gaps between Therapy Sessions
Clinician-delivered therapy is the gold standard for mental healthcare, supporting strong clinical outcomes. However, a limitation of the traditional therapy model is a lack of support for service users between their weekly sessions. Mental health is a 24/7 part of life, and service users should reflect on their behaviour daily, even outside of typical therapist working hours.
We've been aware of this challenge for some time, and we wanted to enable users to meaningfully reflect on their mood and behaviour in between therapy sessions.
How Let’s Chat works
Journaling is a therapeutic process, and Let's Chat enables journaling through conversation with a nonjudgmental Conversational AI agent that summarises their issues and asks relevant and thought-provoking questions. Conversations are stored in the app, so users can scroll through their chat transcripts and reflect on them over time. Some users have likened Let's Chat to being able to digitally message a wise friend who's always there to listen.
From a technical and clinical standpoint, using Large Language Models (LLMs) unlocks benefits that are impossible to realise with rules-based techniques built with pre-set content and predetermined pathways. Each of us have unique ways of reflecting, and traditional methods cannot provide the empathetic and relevant voice to facilitate regular and valuable self-reflection. Let's Chat utilises LLMs so users can engage naturally, and technical safeguards built into the Limbic Layer mean that the feature will never deliver specific clinical advice. Let’s Chat focuses on asking questions to guide self-reflection and providing generalised tips for wellbeing.
Our commitment to safety
Our Clinical team has rigorously evaluated Let’s Chat outputs in a comprehensive testing process, including automated testing, red team testing, and meticulous human clinical safety assessments across thousands of interactions. All free text user inputs are monitored by our Crisis Management Engine, which detects when users refer to high risk scenarios and appropriately signposts them to help in their moment of need. As part of our ongoing commitment to the safety of our products and the transparency of our technology, we're pleased to say that these updates ensure that Limbic Care remains compliant with our UKCA Class I Medical Device Regulation certification.
Limbic Care is rolling out to NHS Talking Therapies partners this winter. To join them, learn more about Limbic Care or contact our team.
